Durham Cathedral

Durham Cathedral was built in the late 11th and early 12th centuries to house the relics of St Cuthbert. This world heritage landmark is a UNESCO site.  Behind the cathedral stands the castle, an ancient Norman fortress which was the residence of the prince-bishops of Durham.

Beamish Museum

Step back in time with a visit to Beamish Museum  where history comes alive. An open air living museum where you can enjoy being driven around in buses, trams and trolley buses of yesteryear. Visit the Old Town the Miners Pit Village, the old Farm and the 1950’s area.

Locomotion Museum

The Fir Tree Country Hotel is situated just a short drive from the national railway museum’s Shildon site. Perfect for all ages with visiting steam engines including The Flying Scotsman and A4 Pacific and many resident engines. In 2024 Locomotion opened it’s new engine shed inspired hall.
